Happy New Year!

‘Come on, the water’s warm!’ ‘What does the Garmin say?’ ‘81 degrees!’

A little beachcombing, sunbathing, underwater exploring, conch ceviche on the sand, and some skim boarding…..a wonderful way to ring in the New Year!

Some how I managed to miss snapping the really good wipeouts, probably laughing too hard!

Belize has been one adventure after another! San Pedro on Ambergris Caye was our big city experience. Have ya ever been to a chicken drop? Leave it to Belizeans to think of a game like this. A $1 bet could win you $100, just bet on the square where the chicken is gonna drop it’s load. So, we grabbed a beer, a handful of dollars, and cheered the chicken into pooping on our numbered square!

Leland, the chicken wrangler, lends his ladies to the Thursday nite festivities.
Toss a few corn kernels on the game board, watch the chicken pluck around, waiting for something to come out the other end!

Off to the funky little island Caye Caulker. A wonderfully slow, no shoes, sandy lane kind of town with a little excitement…..Hoss took a kiteboarding lesson.

This was a full two hours of gut gripping laughs!

We took a break from the cities and crowds and hopped from one Caye to the next. Some deserted, some with quaint resorts, others a thatch bar or abandoned palapa.

Tucked into the mangroves on the Pelican Cays is Hideway Cay –
thanks for the company Kim, Dustin, and Ama!
Weathering a storm, anchored off Ranguana Cay. Delicious conche ceviche Juan!
Speaking of anchor…..we lost our back up anchor in 60 ft of water off Lark Cay.
Don’t worry, we found it using Super Dinghy’s baby bruce anchor, a lot of patience, and our fantastic treasure hunting skills!
A Belizan Channel Marker! This might explain how we ran aground, more like touched bottom, a little throttle and she kept goin!

Feelin the need for a treat…..ok, and maybe some grocery provisions, we sailed over to Palacencia. Palacencia is a peninsula on the mainland. It is also home of Tutti-Frutti, easily one of the best gelato joints we’ve ever come across. There is a quirky sidewalk that winds through the village, meandering through people’s backyards, along the beach, past the popular watering holes, and then it just sorta peters out at the edge of town. With a sidewalk as your main thorofare, no one is in a hurry, palm trees rustle, and waves lap on shore.

A section of Palacencia’s famous sidewalk!

Time is running out…..our zarpe says we will be exiting Belize January 6 and then on to Guatemala! So, on that note – catch ya later!
